Checking in: Bills Boathouse

Updated: Jul 14, 2020

For our second wedding anniversary I decided to book something a little different. At the time I was in my second trimester of pregnancy and had pilates and uni commitments during the week which meant we couldn’t go too far. Luckily I had discovered this unique spot called Bills Boathouse a few months prior and decided that this weekend would be the perfect time to book it in.

The boathouse is positioned in a quiet spot in White Sands, just down the road from Murray Bridge. During our stay it was in a slightly busier area of Murray Bridge so I think the new location will be even more ideal.

So what is a boathouse you might be wondering at this point? Well it is a self contained bungalow permanently placed in an area sitting over the water but attached to a jetty.

What makes this accommodation so special? Bill’s Boathouse went the extra mile in providing everything that we could desire for a relaxing break on the Murray river. Upon entering Bill’s we were struck by the rustic design and its ability to bring you closer to nature whilst still thinking of your privacy. We got good use out of the kayaks as well as the 2-person hammock set up on the deck which was perfect for curling up in for a few hours of downtime with a good book. At night we enjoyed eating dinner on the deck followed by roasting marshmallows in the fire pit whilst watching the sun set.

If you are in the mood to cook the Boathouse has a fully functioning kitchen, fishing rod and tackle plus a Webber BBQ positioned on the deck. The large outdoor couches mean that you can sit in comfort as you eat or wait for your meal to be ready whilst spotting wildlife and enjoying the glow of the fairy lights.

My husband and I both slept well for the two nights of our stay and enjoyed drifting off to the gentle motion of the house swaying on the water. I loved that the house included a full size shower as well as a desk so that I could do a bit of work whilst my husband had an afternoon snooze. In the morning you are provided with breakfast provisions including bread, milk and eggs or for those wanting a sweeter option there was muesli, blueberries and yoghurt.

So who would be best suited to Bills Boathouse? This accommodation comfortably sleeps 2 guests in a queen bed and for this reason I would highly recommend it to couples or close friends that don’t mind sharing a bed. Nature lovers in need of some down time would appreciate the serenity and active guests would enjoy kayaking around the Murray or fishing during the day. Solo travellers looking for somewhere to let their creativity flow would also enjoy this space.

Lastly once you have checked into Bill’s Boathouse there is no real reason to leave however if you are wanting to explore the nearby attractions I recommend visiting Monarto Zoo, enjoying a nature walk or taking in a cruise on paddle boat.
